Apprentice Meets God

The fifth and final book of the Belgariad series brings the story to a satisfactory climax. Both Garion and Ce'Nedra are exceedingly busy in bringing everything to pass as stipulated by the prophecy. Probably they needn't have bothered, the prophecy and its counterpart moved everyone around like so many chess pieces.

Garion is traveling East and going through Gar Og Nadrak when he is apprehended by the Mallorean military first, then by the King's secret service second. The travel arrangements and both these situations offer lots of comedy elements. So will the continuation of the journey into the high North.

While Garion is traveling to his final destination, Ce'Nedra and her army are busy in Mishrak ac Thull making a pest of themselves. But it turns out they are caught between to enemy armies and will have their work cut out getting in and out in more or less one piece. Army and fleet make a fairly good job of this. Polgara, Durnik, Ce'Nedra and Errand on the other hand end up as guests of the Emperor of Mallorea.

In the end, everyone is exactly where they should be, and the prophecies can have their say. The book is more action adventure than its predecessors, but you can't wage a war without breaking some eggs. It also means that the relentless banter is at a low. But the body count is rising on and off front stage. The 'they lived happily ever after' part is fairly soppy and could have been shorter.

What all five books have in common is the meticulous adherence to the principles of the local magic. The timeline sometimes looks a bit iffy, but who is counting days when it gets really riveting. The development of the characters from book one to five is fairly well done, but then who can say what comes into a teenager's head at any given time? And with the goals set, some brutal adjustments may be fairly real.

Enchanter's End Game is book 5 in the Belgariad and brings the story of the prophecy to an end. Or at least that was what the authors intended and executed. What happens when the publisher decides 'this was a good one, write a sequel' will be visible in the Malloreon. I'll deal with that in later reviews.
